What if an electrician came to your home and rewired your house so that all of the lights were turned off and on at the same time using a single switch? Most homeowners would show that electrician the door. However we still use that same impractical and inefficient concept for cooling and heating our homes. A single thermostat controls the temperature for the entire house, leaving some rooms cold, some rooms hot and some rooms in a constant state of flux.

For decades, homeowners have accepted this one-thermostat-for-all-rooms solution. They’ve begrudgingly used space heaters and window air conditioners to try to even out temperatures in attics, basements, rec rooms and bedrooms that never feel comfortable. However, there are plenty of options when it comes to controlling home comfort. Whether the problem is a single room or single area of the home, or you’re looking for a more cost-effective and energy conscious solution for the entire house, there are options.

Controlled Comfort With Home Zoning

A zoned home is divided into segments, based upon each segment’s need for conditioning. Each zone is controlled by a thermostat, but instead of those thermostats connecting to a single unit, each zone has its own, individual split-conditioning system that keeps that zone the perfect temperature, without affecting other zones. This can improve energy efficiency and reduces heating and cooling costs across the board.

Zoning is very popular in new builds, but it is also possible for existing homes. Zoning is appropriate for all homes that:

  • Have two or more levels
  • Have rooms with large windows and/or vaulted ceilings
  • Make use of basements or attics as living space
  • Are built over concrete slabs
  • Experience extreme temperature swings or differentials
  • Are over 60 years old and cannot be torn up for ductwork
  • Experience family fights over the thermostat

Stop Treating Symptoms

In the past, homeowners have been forced to either accept cold spots and hot spots, or they have had to resort to expensive short-term solutions like window AC units or space heaters to control the temperature in different areas of their home. These spot fixes can help control comfort, but they are expensive both to purchase and utilize and they don’t solve the larger problem. It’s like taking aspirin when you have the flu – it can help treat the symptoms, but it doesn’t cure the virus.

Home zoning is an energy efficient and cost-effective way to achieve the comfort that you and your family deserve. Each zone is controlled by its own, individual thermostat that eliminates the need for supplemental systems and reduces energy bills. Once installed, zoned units are extremely quiet, causing no disruption in the everyday activities of life.

Single-unit cooling and heating is impractical and unnecessary. Homeowners have options that are completely customizable based upon individual needs and preferences. With home-zoning, families not only achieve comfort, but harmony in the home.

Comments Off on The Best Tips to meet Fall and save Energy from your Air Conditioner.
oct3   The Best Tips to meet Fall and save Energy from your Air Conditioner. Summer is getting ready to leave for good, or well for a few months, but are you ready to save up energy bills? Our experts at W. Williams Air Conditioning came up with a list of 5 ideas on how to welcome fall into your house without freezing in order to lower the energy bill. Check out these 5 Energy Saving Air Conditioning Tips for Fall
  1. Reset your House Temperature
The temperature inside your house must be in accordance with the temperature outside so set your Air Conditioner to 17 - 19°C during fall and winter. You must find a balance between comfort and efficiency so you can help your air conditioner save up energy.
  1. Use the Sun
The Air Conditioner’s heating system is machinery. In order to help it work efficiently and not abandon you in the coldest hours, make sure you use the Sun’s warmth in order to invite heat inside your house during the fall season. The Sun is still strong and even healthy in September and October so open up the curtains at the windows that are in the direction of the Sun during the day.
  1. Re-decorate your house
No, we don’t mean you should get mad with house designs, but we’re simply asking you to move the furniture away from the path of the heating system or any large objects that could consume the heat or that could stop it from warming up the air channel of your room.
  1. Insulation
Try to cover any drafty windows or spots into your house. While you can open curtains from windows that are warmed up by the Sun, you should also cover drafty windows or any spots in the house that allow the cold air to sneak into your rooms. Also, use duct insulation to your heating system in order to save up energy, protect your Air Conditioner System and reduce the noise. Talk to our consultants about the best types of duct insulation.
  1. Maintenance
Your air-conditioner will need a professional check up because its system can suffer from changing temperature and moving from the summer temperatures to the cooler temperatures. Professional intervention can clean up and update your filters and they can also check the general status of your air conditioner. Normally, your system filters should be changed once a month, because the dust affects the performance of your heating system and it also affects the quality of air that is pumped up into your house. Taking care of the filters can reduce your energy bills by 5 %- 15%. Schedule a Fall Maintenance for your Air Conditioner and you are ready to keep warm and wealthy!

Sept 3   Are you looking for an efficient, low-cost solution to satisfy room temperature troubles? No matter what size space you’re trying to cool or heat, discover energy efficient savings and eco-friendly solutions, while keeping the temperature just right inside your home. Imagine the possibilities with a ductless temperature controlled system.

Where’s All the Money Going?

Central air and other similar ducted systems are catch-all heating solutions that lack the precision and control of their ductless counterparts. When a forced air system works to cool or heat your home, you have little control over where that air goes. This means that vacant rooms are getting the same amount of energy and service as your favorite spots in the house.

It’s wasteful, inefficient and expensive to cool or heat the basement storeroom the same way you cool or heat the kitchen or bedroom. But a ducted system doesn’t allow for that kind of precise control. So the cold or warm air flows throughout your home and you see the results of this inefficiency on your utility bill every month.

How can you target the specific rooms you use the most and divert some of the energy and costs from the ones you don’t?

Where Traditional HVAC Falls Short

There are several ways that traditional systems fall short:

  • Thermostat placement is rarely conducive to providing accurate comfort control in other areas. For example, thermostats can often be found in a home’s master bedroom. When the temperature in that room is adjusted, the children’s room across the hall may not be receiving the comfort that it needs.
  • Ductwork tends to run through uninsulated spaces, which leads to thermal heat loss. If there is a leak in the ductwork, or if flex-ducting is pinched due to improper installation, duct-loss will lead to wasted energy as the system has to compensate for the wasted energy.
  • Lastly, conventional systems use a standard single speed compressor that can only run at full speed. This means that the system works at full capacity until the desired temperature is achieved, then shuts off. As the temperature changes, this cycle repeats and can create uncomfortable drafts and expensive energy spikes.

The Targeted Solution

Would you like to get back in control in less than two days? An easy-to-install ductless system has proven technology that is far more energy efficient than traditional HVAC and up to 40 percent more efficient than window units.

Here’s a how a ducted system works inefficiently; it notices that the temperature is, for example, two degrees higher than what it ought to be. It turns on, works frantically to pump cool air throughout the home and when it senses the temperature has lowered, it shuts off. Gradually, the space warms again.

On the other hand, the Mitsubishi Electric ductless system uses an INVERTER-driven compressor to provide exact control 100 percent of the time. They constantly adjust to even the slightest temperature changes in the room so that it doesn’t fluctuate – and they don’t waste money or energy on the zones where you spend little time.

The ductless unit is installed to deliver room-by-room comfort in the spaces you choose. The majority of your cooling and heating energy (and money) goes where you need it, and not where you don’t. In this way, you get personalized comfort in the rooms you use most. This is known as “zone control”.

Even More Ways to Save

Most ductless systems have earned the ENERGY STAR, which means savings as they operate, as well as applicable ENERGY STAR rebates. Some units are eligible for state or federal tax credits, or local utility discounts. The biggest long-term savings comes from using a system that works efficiently. According to the ENERGY STAR website(link is external), “Replacing your system with an ENERGY STAR certified model could cut your heating and cooling costs by 30 percent.”

Big or small, no matter where you live, outdated technology costs more to operate. Ducted systems work round-the-clock sending cold or warm air to vacant rooms and they also use unnecessary energy as the temperature naturally fluctuates. INVERTER-driven compressors in ductless systems ensure the optimal efficiency of the energy they expend; you save even more by concentrating your temperature control efforts in only the rooms that matter.

Comments Off on Detox the air in your home with APCO Fresh-Aire UV

What APCO Does

  • Odor Control

Let's face it, no one wants visiting friends or family to smell the cat box or last night's garlic sauce. You could use a spray or a candle but those things just perfume the air. APCO actually removes odors by transforming odor-causing VOC molecules into harmless water vapor and CO2. So keep the cat, and fry that fish!

  • Clean Coils

The UV-C light in APCO works just as well at keeping AC coils clean as our non-PCO products. Moldy coils shorten the life of the air system and waste energy by reducing efficiency. UV-C light kills the mold and reduces the need for system maintenance.

  • Indoor Air Quality

According to the EPA indoor air pollution is often five times worse than outdoor and represents a significant health risk. An APCO whole-house air purifier improves indoor air quality by destroying odor-causing and potentially toxic VOCs, while sterilizing mold, bacteria, viruses, and allergens from the air stream.

How APCO Works

  • Advanced Photocatalytic Oxidation

APCO detoxes the air with a process called photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), a technology similar to the catalytic converter on your car’s exhaust. UV-C light reacts with titanium dioxide infused into the carbon which effectively disintegrates the captured contaminants, leaving only harmless water vapor and CO₂ which are released back into the air. This process leaves the carbon cells clean so they never fill up or need to be replaced. The result is clean, odor-free air throughout the home.

  • Germ-Killing Power of UV-C Light

For over a century scientists have known about the germ-killing properties of UV-C light. Because this frequency of light is filtered out by the Earth's atmosphere microorganisms have no defense against it. It works by scrambling their DNA which prevents them from reproducing.
